The trams
We have 2 trams which originally started their working lives in Lisbon, Portugal. Similar models are still running there today - the background picture shows one in use.
After working in Lisbon, on a narrow-gauge track, they went to Aspen, Colorado in the USA. Subsequently they were purchased by the team in Henderson, who intended to refurbish them but were unable to complete the work. We acquired them in late 2014. They have both been extensively rebuilt and re-gauged to our track, with tram 520 coming into service in 2017 and tram 526 in 2022.
They operate with two 25HP electric motors on each tram. Rather than installing overhead power lines etc along the track an 80kVA diesel generator, mounted on a standard NZR freight bogie between the trams, is used to provide the electricity.
The trams usually run on the line from Millington Bush station to the main car-park but can be used anywhere on our system. As a considerable part of the trams overhangs the wheels, sitting at the front and looking forwards gives a very interesting journey as the tram travels between the trees in the bush.
